Have you ever felt that your home office just isn’t working well for you?

It’s perhaps not a style that you find supportive or it is cluttered and just decreases your productivity. Disarray and unorganized papers, files, contact information can really eat up a lot of time that you could be using to make a successful home based business.

Often we end up surrounded by so much outdated materials that our system (if we had one) to find what we need got buried under last years or months papers, notes, files and more. So, first step, take a deep breath and recognize you can do this. Just take one step at a time.

Some tasks are quiet obvious yet daunting. But the reward will amaze you. So let’s begin.

Look around your office and find any outdated and broken unusable equipment. Most of us can easily get into the mode of someday (and someday just doesn’t come), I’ll get that old ‘whatever’ fixed. Well in today’s technology everything you buy is outdated before you get it home.

Take what is broken and send it to the proper recycle place NOW. If equipment is old but does not really meeting your needs; what about donating it to your local Boys and Girls Club or YMCA, etc. Take any manuals and extra cartridges that they may be able to use. This first step of clearing space for many starts a process that leads to a calm, professional and personal space.

Next step would be to get some boxes for garbage and have your shredder handy as necessary. Take ONE drawer, remove everything. Discard obvious junk and set the rest aside. Do you have any other junk type drawers? If so, then do the same.

Now re-organize and decide what really needs to be in each drawer, what needs to be immediately accessible and what will need to be available but not in your desk. Sort out the various equipment "rubber bands, paper clips, markers, pencils, staples, tape, and place them into caddies or trays designed to hold desk supplies. Set those things aside.

Office Supply stores have very inexpensive dividers and containers for use in desk drawer and for on top of the desk.

Let’s tackle the desk top itself.

Think of it as Prime Real Estate. It is important to have on the desk top only what you really need. So do you really need the coffee pot there, radio, manuals, reference books, how many file bins, photos…..look it all over and clear your workspace. Something will need to move to a well organized set of shelves. Suggest putting phone book on shelf or I need a calculator on my desk so I keep the phone book under it and out of the way but handy. (Be sure all old out of date manuals go in the ‘round bin’). I’ve been shocked personally when I went through my office from top to bottom last time; my how old things build up. And dust bunnies! Yikes!

I have two desks, a corner desk for my computer with wings on each side and my main desk. With a rolling chair I can wiz back and forth in a second as needed. Cleaning it up is a process but in the end it will make your work so much easier.

Scams - They are out their looking for YOU!

At the consumer affairs website, you can file a complaint via their complaint form, learn about the lemon law and read all the alerts on the “Scam Alert” page. It’s a great resource!

Internet Crime Complaint Center

This site is a partnership of the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center. They have a form for filing a complaint and good information on all the scams that are running rampant on the Internet today. Well worth checking out and bookmarking.

Fraud.org

You will find some great tips lists and other information listing at Fraud.org as well as a complaint form if you feel you have been scammed.

Scambusters

This website is updated daily, and has been helping people avoid scams since 1994. It is an excellent resource when checking out an unfamiliar business opportunity.

One of your best tools is to use Google Search wisely. Look up the CEO's of a company, key people involved, track record. People will hit the forums with any negitive information --- just remeber, is it really a bad business OR someone who just didn't do the work or is trying to sell you something else.

Summer Time and the Living is Easy ...

Or is it? Except for the temptations and challenges that come with warm weather, the call of the beach or local pool’ it can be challenging especially if you have school age children. Many of us had as one of the many reasons we started a home based business, was so we could spend more time with the family. But when summer comes all of a sudden your well laid plans of time management can be seriously tested. Yikes what’s a MOM or DAD to do?

We’ve all heard it: “I’m bored!”, “There’s nothing to do!”, Whining ….”All the other kids are going to the ….”. Then the fights start, phone rings and the dog knocks the plate of sandwiches to the floor.
Here are a couple of ideas that might be helpful.

1. Depending on the age of the kids, adjust when you work. If they have nap times that can be much needed quiet time for you. I like to get up early while the house is quiet, before any one is trying to grab some time that I need for the Business. So while they sleep I do a bit of Yoga to set the intent of the day and then enjoy the silence to work. When the kids wake up, I’m ready for a break and some quality time with them. Also on spiring break and summer I not only get up earlier but go to bed a bit later and NO late night TV.

2. Do you have a neighborhood teenager or elder …. Older grandmothers or grandfathers can make great caregivers. They have a life time of experience and usually a lot of wisdom and patience.

3. Check out all the summer activities in your area. There are Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, Day Camps and Church Camps. Also swimming lessons, crafts, dance classes, gymnastics and in our area a supervised bike rodeo run by the local YMCA. Check for Health Club kids programs and more. Running kids from one activity to the next is not what I mean. But a couple of extra activities a week for fun with someone else doing the driving will give you some more of that quiet time you need and they will love you for it.

4. Sometimes it helps to buddy up with another family that wants to trade days; I’ll take yours on Monday and Wednesday and you take mine on Tuesday and Thursday. With the right person this can work wonders to free up time.

5. Finally, if you're in a pinch trying to meet a deadline or make an important call, bribery works wonders! No, it's not the most highly praised parenting tactic in the book, but it can be quite effective. Tell the kids that if they'll keep it down until you get finished, you'll take them to get ice cream afterwards.

It’s easy to do everything by hand for a short while in the beginning but soon, as your business starts to build, it will be very helpful to have other tools available. It is wise to start learning about them before you need them so you will be ready!

Blogging for fun and profit (this one of my favorite!)

I’ve found that blogging is not only a lot of fun, but a great way to communicate your ideas and bring people to your website or for needed product information; I use blogger.com as it is FREE and very easy to use. It has a very short learning curve.

For even greater results create several blogs each as an individual account, NOT under one account. This is called Daisy Chaining. So each blog is signed in under its own unique email address. Then post the same article with only a sentence or two changes. This is called Spider food and works your blog up to towards the top of the Google Search engine.

Success in Your Home Business

Being remarkable! But how do I make myself extraordinary, not just remarkable? Your online home business and every business needs an online presence in todays world. Consitant work, education, organization and team work leads to a home based business opportunaty that becomes profitable for you.

As a mentor, coach and business consultant, people often ask that question. The answer is simple - do something that’s worth people remarking about.

Find a way to stand out, to be a bit different than all other web sites and home businesses. Many ways to do this, just be yourself and show what is unique about who you are and what you offer..

One example, as a blogger, is to find great posts to link too. Then, go to the posts you link too and leave a comment. Leaving comments are really important. Then, once you’ve published your post, email the owner of the post you linked to and let them know you loved their post and just published something about it on your own blog.

Stumble for example, the post you linked too - giving the blog owner another reason to pay attention to you. This will really catch attention and start your way up the into Google search engine. Go for Page 1, don’t know how? Contact me …. As a mentor that’s a part of my business.

And think outside the box. We so often stop with our first ideas or look to others and think there is only one way to do business. YES look to those that are successful but also look outside the box. You don’t just have to find that one, special something in your business that will draw people’s interest. It doesn’t have to be that difficult. Use different media ideas to catch people eye. Make things easy to read and use color can make an impression.

An impression is a feeling or opinion about something. It’s also a mark made on a surface - like the impression your body makes when you fall into the snow. Except the surface you want to leave an impression on is their mind or even their heart. And BRAND yourself. Everyone recognizes: McDonalds uses the Golden Arches (even a 4 year old can spot that), Target has it’s Red Circle as for myself I’m Goes Green which relates to my work on environment awareness and $ Goes Green $, making a profitable home business, especially those needing use of internet which is almost all businesses.

If you’re running a business and if you’re interacting with people, you will have have plenty of ideas and opportunities to do something remarkable - something worth remarking about. Just give something a try and see how it goes. Track your results on everything you do.

It’s a good idea to Brain Storm with those that are successful in business although there is a lot to learn from those that lost their shirt in business. Keep an open mind and an open ear; then engage brain and take action. Use Google Search to check out as many sites as you can.
